Buyer Beware. Please view the client complaints on the website Rip Off Report. There are about 8 complaints to read through.

John Derry states that he is a recovering addict and a licensed pharmacist. What qualifies him to charge approximately $30,000 per month per person to stay in his home? What an amazing way to try to get rich quick. Is he helping people or duping people with what seems to be artful master manipulation addict behavior. His actions and behavior appears to be indicitive of appaulling deceit, mean spiritness and thievery - classic textbook addict characteristics.

Perhaps John Derry ought to seek counselling himself.

John Derry of A Home Away Retreat is making a lot of money off of the addicts he claims to “help.” While it’s true that we are aware that we will not receive a refund should we not complete our stay at A Home Away; John Derry will make so that it looks like you want to leave when in fact he has manipulated the process so that you MUST get the heck out of there while he and his wife essentially get $25,000 for services not rendered. This place is a complete scam. John Derry didn’t do anything but call me names and belittle everyone who was staying there. I agree with the other complaints in that he is a very angry man. I did not receive a refund and they are $25,000 richer. The retreat offers 8 rooms for clients to stay, therefore if they have 8 people staying there that’s $200,000!! There were 2 people who left before I did, that’s $75,000 in their pockets.

A Home Away is a private “addiction recovery” treatment house in Kelowna, BC. Those who are fortunate enough to have the money to attend places like this expect a little decency and respect! I am very disappointed and saddened that I’ve been taken advantage of in this way. Had I known that I would be treated with such disrespect and what I would describe as anger, I wouldn’t have chosen A Home Away for my treatment.I don’t understand how people can get away with these sorts of things! Shortly after my arrival to A Home Away, owner and counsellor John Derry questioned me about my finances and suggested that I stay longer than the one month stay - explaining that I would benefit from staying 2 or 3 months.I was very confused by this and became extremely uncomfortable around John Derry. I didn’t understand why this was sprung on me so shortly after my arrival. (It has since been explained to me that this is when we (addicts) are most vulnerable.) I choose to leave A Home Away after a few days and was refused a refund.People have to pay the 10 thousand dollars before they arrive to A Home Away and without the opportunity to check it out, you are going in without having even met John Derry nor viewed the facility, which is a house. It has since been brought to my attention that ‘A Home Away’ is also listed on a OkanaganHoliday(org or com) website as a Bed and Breakfast! It’s an ‘addiction’ house and a bed and breakfast - isn’t that interesting! Please be aware about what you are putting your hard earned 10 thousand for one month toward. I wish that I had.

Thank you.D.Kelowna, British Columbia Canada

A Home Away Retreat Inc is a private drug and alcohol house in Kelowna BC, Canada. It is a house. A house. It is John Derry’s house. Not unlike private day care for children and elderly people care in peoples’ own homes, this private drug and alcohol house ought to be held accountable and monitored in some manner. Private day care for children and private elderly people care which are held in people’s own homes have strict regulations to adhere too. The cost of staying at this house is approximately $30,000 per 42 days. That is a lot of money. Buyer be very aware. Please do your research before committing to anything. Anyone can claim they can help you, but what are their reviews? Are they registered with the Better Business Bureau? What type of accreditation do they have and what type of people do they employ to work there? These are all good things to know before signing any papers.

John Derry states that he himself is a recovering addict and is a licensed pharmacist. How ironic. John Derry states that he holds a Master of Arts in Addiction Counselling from Hazeldon Minnesota. This sounds cerebral and fancy. Even if this is true, please view the Hazeldon link above to view. This program takes less than a year to complete and the only requirement to get into this program is to have a basic general degree of any kind.

A Home Away Retreat Inc Scam. Can you trust self professed addict John Derry with your thousands of dollars?

Is A Home Away Retreat Inc a Scam? Can you trust self professed addict John Derry with your thousands of dollars?

It seems that John Derry’s hyprocrisy is palpable. He charges over $30,000 a month per person per month to stay in his home. He doles out advice about how to learn to live a better life. He claims to have integrity and he claims to live by honesty. By many accounts, these claims are a complete joke. Is he duping people or helping people? Of course he is going to make such claims, he is charging over $30, 000 per month per person to stay in his home. John Derry states that he himself is in recovery. Perhaps the great irony is his own master manipulation of unsuspecting and vulnerable people.
Are the many former A Home Away Retreat Inc staff members and clients all wrong about John Derry? Years ago to present day the complaints about John Derry by many different people all share the exact same view.

John Derry states that he is a recovering addict. What qualifies him to charge over $30,000 a month per person to stay in his home? The many complaints by former A Home Away Retreat Inc clients and staff all express the same view in terms of how they were masterfully manipulated and ripped off by John Derry.
John Derry’s highly inappropriate behavior makes one wonder how it is that he has the audacity to refuse to own up to his many indiscretions and appaulling deceitful behavior. However, these are textbook classic characteristics of addict behavior. Perhaps John Derry ought to seek out some counselling for himself.

A Home Away Retreat Inc in Kelowna BC was sued for similar reasons as the famous celebrity rehab "Promises" in Malibu California

The trouble with rehab, Malibu-style Lawsuits and violations reveal problems in a luxury cottage industry for the addicted.

Hollywood rehab can produce unhappy endings, even when the patient isn’t named Lindsay or Britney.
That’s what Kelly Logan learned when he sought treatment for a methamphetamine addiction at Promises Malibu, detox destination to the stars.
Logan’s brother, Garfield, says he paid $42,000 up front to admit the former professional surfer for a month at Promises’ canyon-top Mediterranean-style home. Five days later, he says, Promises kicked Logan out for belligerent behavior but kept all the money.
“They’re scam artists,” said Garfield Logan, a plaintiff in one of four consumer-rights, breach-of-contract and unfair-business-practice lawsuits filed against Promises Malibu and its Westside branch in the last year.
Promises has denied the allegations.
The suits and state licensing violations reveal a little-seen side to the high-end rehabilitation centers that have become a Malibu cottage industry and — thanks to such patrons as Promises alums Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears — a tabloid feeding ground.
